سازند گچساران در ابتدا با عنوان گروه ژیپس پایینی، در ادامه سری فارس پایینی و در نهایت به سازند گچساران تغییر نام داد. تقسیم‌بندی سازند گچساران با توجه به اهمیت آن در حین عملیات حفاری، از دیرباز مورد توجه زمین‌شناسان متعددی بوده و در طی سالیان تعاریف دقیق‌تر و کاربردی‌تری از آنها ارائه شده است. سازند گچساران تحت عنوان سری فارس پایینی در ابتدا به سه قسمت Stage I (معادل بخش‌های یک الی پنج امروزی)، Stage II (معادل بخش شش امروزی) و Stage III (معادل بخش هفت امروزی) و در نهایت به هفت بخش (بخش 7 در رأس و بخش یک یا پوش‌سنگ در قاعده) تقسیم گردید. زمین‌شناسان مختلف در طی سالیان گذشته، به دلیل کنترل بهتر روند حفاری جهت جلوگیری از اشتباه و ایجاد مشکلات فنی در حین عملیات حفاری، لایه‌های راهنمای متفاوتی در تمام ضخامت سازند گچساران از ساختمان‌های مختلف مطرح نموده که در حال حاضر، فقط لایه‌های راهنمای بخش پوش‌سنگ شامل لایه‌های راهنمای A، B، C، D، E و F مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرند. جهت بررسی تعاریف و تعیین خصوصیات سنگ چینه‌نگاری کلیه بخش‌ها، کلیه ساختمان‌های موجود در زون دزفول (شمالی، جنوبی و دشت آبادان) مورد بررسی قرار گرفت.
